Description

Drawings for a species design, a mermaid based on the blue shark, Prionace glauca. This page focuses on the physical appearance, behavior, and general species facts.

text:

The blue shark mermaid lives in a group, called a merg, of 5-7 individuals (small compared to the mergs of other species) with the male:female ratio rather even. They work together to take down even large ships. When feeding, the group will sing to seduce and hypnotize, but just two or three will physically grab men and pull them down. Once in the water, a man is swarmed by the singing merg and quickly devoured. Blue shark mermaids are a     ravenous species and will kill and eat any and all humans they can.

Sexual dimorphism: Both sexes have upper bodies resembling human females. This is done with specialized pectoral muscles covered by a layer of fat to imitate breasts and is for the purpose of better attracting the main prey: human males. However, the two sexes are distinguishable in the same way as sharks; males have claspers for reproduction, while females do not. Also like sharks, females are generally larger and have thicker skin to accommodate biting during courtship and mating.

Range: Pelagic zones of temperate and tropical oceans between the surface and a depth of 350 meters.
Apperance: Females are typically 2.75-4.0m in length from the crown of the head to the tip of the caudal fin and weighing 80-115kg. Males grow to 2.43-3.35m long and weigh from 60-95kg. They are bright blue dorsally and white ventrally with anal second dorsal fins aligned, like the blue shark.
Diet: Humans. If humans are unavailable for over 3 months, they will eat fish, squid, or small sharks.
Predators: Large sharks, the occasional orca. Humans do antagonize and attempt to capture them, but none have succeeded in capturing one alive. In these attempts, mermaids are often killed.

note:
I get that it is exclusive to have them imitate human females only in order to attract men. But with a low gay population in humans, it makes more evolutionary sense to cater to the majority. A mermaid who looked like a human male would get less food. He could be part of the merg that feeds and doesn't pull the men down into the water, but if this were the only role he could play, he would be at a disadvantage when separated form the merg. Also, it is primarily the song that hypnotizes men, the physical appearance just helps, and as we have seen, evolution supports traits that help. Even though a merman could seduce a straight human man through the hypnosis of song, he may get less than merpeople who look like female humans, so the female traits are what win evolutionarily. Though, mostly, I just wanted to stick to the mythology, in which mermaids/sirens are described as female.
